Selecting Your Hair Piece

Understanding your options: synthetic versus human hair, and the four cap constructions.

Synthetic hair pieces

Synthetic hair is low maintenance, easy to care for, and retains its style with minimal effort. As a wash-and-wear fiber with built-in memory, its shape — whether wavy or straight — returns to its original form after washing.

Synthetic hair should be washed every 6 to 8 wearings (when worn for three hours or more per day) to maintain its appearance and texture. It should not be exposed to heat sources such as blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons or ovens, as heat can cause damage. It will also react to friction, which can lead to frizzing. This type of hair is an excellent option for anyone who wants a convenient, ready-to-wear style.

Human hair pieces

Human hair is an excellent option for those who prefer greater flexibility in styling, whether straight, wavy, or air-dried. With human hair you can change your look after each wash, or from day to day. Regular deep conditioning and proper hydration are essential to prevent dryness and damage.

With human hair we can also deposit color for an overall new shade, create a shadow root for more dimension, add lowlights, or perform a perm or body wave to achieve the look you want. All in all, human hair offers the most flexibility and versatility for creating a personalized style.

The four cap constructions

How a piece is built changes how it sits, how it parts, how it breathes and how long it lasts. These are the four main constructions we work with.

Machine-Made

Machine-made wigs are constructed from wefts of hair sewn together to create a pre-styled, pre-cut look. They are more comfortable when worn over hair rather than against a bald scalp, and need to be replaced more frequently.

Mono Top

Mono top wigs create a natural looking part, giving the appearance of hair growing from the scalp. This construction has a wefted back.

All Hand-Tied

An all hand-tied wig provides a natural-looking hairline and multidirectional parting that resembles natural growth and moves the way your own hair moves. There is ample stretch in the construction, so it hugs the head for a more customized fit — the most lightweight, breathable and comfortable option.

Lace Front

Lace front gives the most natural-looking hairline by laying flush against the scalp, which creates the illusion of hair growing from it.
